Federal Judge Rules Cablevision's Remote Storage DVR System Violates Copyright Laws

A federal judge in New York has sided with entertainment producers who claimed that Cablevision's network-based remote-storage digital video recorder system violated copyright infringement laws. The judge, in Twentieth Century Fox v. Cablevision Systems, permanently enjoined Cablevision from proceeding with technology that would have allowed its customers who do not have digital video recorders in their homes to record and play back programs stored on central servers at Cablevision's facilities.

New Braves' GC Ready to Play Ball

Greg J. Heller grew up a Chicago Cubs fan. But when the Cubs face the Atlanta Braves, there's no question who he wants to win. "Braves," said Heller, who on May 21 was named the general counsel for the franchise, a result of its recent sale from Time Warner to Liberty Media. Heller, who has aimed for a job in sports management since college, is more than familiar with his client. Since 2000, he has served as assistant team counsel for the Braves.

Regulators to OK AOL-Time Warner

Regulatory review of the AOL-Time Warner deal may be completed by early fall, and neither the FTC's antitrust review nor the FCC's public interest inquiry has found a reason to block it. Both agencies raised concerns about the merger's potential monopolistic power, but since both sides' lawyers are veterans of the 1996 Time Warner-Turner Broadcasting System deal, composing a consent decree seems likely.

Can the 'Jewish Law Firm' Success Story Be Duplicated?

Before the 1980s, there were white-shoe firms and there were Jewish firms, and the former worked to keep it that way. Nowadays, with Sullivan & Cromwell tapping an ordained rabbi as its next chairman and Weil Gotshal operating offices from Brussels to Singapore, the once-stark differences between the firms have nearly faded. University of Denver law professor Eli Wald says a profession that still struggles with the promotion of women and minorities should look again at the experience of Jewish lawyers.

Survey Shows Summertime Blues for Summer Associates

It's hardly a surprise that being a summer clerk this year wasn't exactly the full five-star experience the summer class of 2009 may have dreamed about in law school. One indication of what a summer intern called "a scary time to be a law student": The number of summer clerks who said they expected to receive full-time job offers was down sharply, according to this year's survey of summer associates. But the 2009 summer experience wasn't all darkness and despair.
