In deals totaling $7.8 billion, PepsiCo has announced plans to buy its two biggest bottlers, Pepsi Bottling Group and PepsiAmericas. PepsiCo will pay $36.50 per share for shares it does not own in Somers, N.Y.-based Pepsi Bottling Group and $28.50 per share for the shares it does not own in Minneapolis-based PepsiAmericas. Also, Citigroup has announced that it plans to sell its entire majority stake in a Japanese asset management company to The Sumitomo Trust and Banking Co. Ltd. for about $795 million.

In 2007 iBasis did a deal with Royal KPN that made the Dutch telecom its majority shareholder. Then, according to a complaint filed Monday in Delaware Chancery Court, KPN proceeded to run iBasis's stock price into the ground so it could cheaply acquire the shares it didn't already own. We can't wait to see what Royal KPN has to say about that assertion, which has turned the tender offer into a juicy litigation.

Swiss pharmaceutical giant Novartis will pay $28.1 billion for an additional 52 percent stake in Alcon, the world's largest eye-care company. The transaction is the second stage of a takeover announced in April 2008 when Novartis purchased from Nestl� S.A. 25 percent of the company for $10.4 billion. Also, Cedar Fair Entertainment Co., an Ohio amusement park and resort operator, has agreed to be acquired by Apollo Management LP for $650 million.

In its second major deal in a week, AIG will sell its foreign life insurance unit, American Life Insurance Company, to MetLife for $15.5 billion. The transaction is part of an asset sell-off by AIG to raise funds to repay about $180 billion in government loans. Also, German chemical and pharmaceutical company Merck KGaA has agreed to take over Millipore Corporation, a life-sciences manufacturing company, in a $7.2 billion cash and debt transaction.
