The Court of Appeals will hear a case Wednesday that focuses on the question: To whom does a telecommuter pay state income tax? Although Thomas Huckaby of Tennessee does not live in New York, does virtually no work there and spends little time there, New York claims it's entitled to tax 100 percent of his income because his employer is based there. The case is being closely watched by other states striving to reconcile old tax codes with contemporary work habits.

San Jose-based television and PC display chip maker Genesis Microchip Inc. has acquired Tualatin, Ore.'s Pixelworks Inc. in a stock deal worth about $584 million. Attorneys in the Palo Alto office of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati represented Genesis. Lawyers in the Menlo Park office of O'Melveny & Myers represented Pixelworks. Also: An Illinois judge threw out a $125 million class action filed against two supermarket chains that allegedly conspired to fix the price of milk in their Chicago locations.

Federal Judge Breyer Runs Up Against Brother's Supreme Court Ruling

When a DEA officer contradicted himself over the reliability of an informant in U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer's courtroom, Breyer demanded to know who would be responsible for investigating. Public defender Barry Portman said that while he hopes the investigation will help defendants who face charges -- thanks to questionable snitches -- he's skeptical it will have much of an effect. Steven Schulman, a name partner at Milberg Weiss Bershad & Schulman, resigned from the embattled class action firm Friday, seven months after he and another partner were indicted in an alleged kickback scheme. Lawyers familiar with the case said the timing of his departure was designed to maximize his payout on leaving the partnership. Schulman's spokesman said the resignation will have no impact on Schulman's joint defense with the firm, but some say Schulman is not averse to negotiating with prosecutors.
