First Shot Fired in Fla. Associate Pay War

The Miami office of New York-based White & Case last week increased first-year associate salaries by $10,000, to $115,000 -- a move that is already forcing other Florida firms to rethink beginner attorneys' compensation. Merger Talks Take a Toll

Driven by "the fear of being caught as the last man standing without a bride," law firm managers are spending more time meeting and assessing their prospects, says Stuart Pape of Washington, D.C.'s Patton Boggs. Clients are pressuring firms to add "breadth and depth" to practice groups and open offices abroad. Firms face associates demanding higher salaries and partners expecting bigger profits. But some, like D.C.'s Wiley, Rein & Fielding, are resisting the urge, says managing partner Richard Wiley.
