Time Settles Libel Case It Once Won at Trial

Court-ordered mediation has settled a libel case a Georgia man brought against Time magazine for falsely identifying him as an international terrorist. Time won the case in a federal trial in 1996, but the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed. Lawyers for the magazine and plaintiff confirm that the case settled, but say the terms are confidential.

Ga. Supreme Court: 'Harsh' Law Means AIDS-Related Med Mal Suit Is Too Late

The Georgia Supreme Court has split 4 to 3 in ruling against an AIDS patient whose doctors allegedly misdiagnosed his condition for years. Even though Derek Canas' parents filed the suit on his behalf less than a year after doctors diagnosed him with AIDS, the Supreme Court ruled that the two-year statute of limitations and five-year statute of repose for medical malpractice claims barred the suit. The court's opinion quoted a prior case that described the statute of repose as a "harsh limitation."
