Shutts & Bowen Opens Tampa Office

Miami-based Shutts & Bowen has opened a Tampa office, bringing the 175-lawyer firm's number of Florida locations to six. The four new attorneys moved to Shutts & Bowen from the Tampa office of Toledo, Ohio-based Shumaker Loop & Kendrick. The new Gulf Coast office focuses on corporate and financial transactions, commercial litigation and intellectual property and is expected to expand to 15 lawyers by the end of the year.

South Florida law firms feel the real estate slump

In another sign of the hard times facing the legal industry, particularly in real-estate heavy South Florida, two local law firms — Holland & Knight and Shutts & Bowen — have laid off non-lawyer staffers. On a day that could be dubbed Black Friday in legal circles, Tampa-based Holland & Knight, one of Florida's largest firms with 1,150 lawyers, laid off 70 staffers Friday, including legal secretaries, IT and accounting staff. No lawyers were laid off. Shutts & Bowen, a 200-lawyer firm based in Miami, laid off nine entry-level file clerks and paralegal clerks the same day. No lawyers or legal secretaries were affected.
