Banking on China

In China, capital markets lawyers are retooling an economy that some analysts predict will surpass the United States' by 2041. The current deal wave represents an advanced stage in China's privatization and market liberalization. The inflow of investment into Chinese banks coincides with their IPOs, which began this summer and will stretch into 2007 and beyond. No client has greater legal needs than a bank, and a handful of firms are especially well-positioned to benefit.

Revenue and revenue per lawyer figures for U.S.-based law firms are obtained from The Am Law 100, except where otherwise noted. Revenue figures for law firms in Europe are from Legal Week. Australian and Canadian firms were surveyed by The American Lawyer. Revenue figures for all overseas firms are converted to dollars using the average annual conversion rate as published by the U.S. Federal Reserve. Revenue figures are rounded to the nearest $500,000.

D.C. Firms View China With Caution

Dozens of U.S. firms have swept into the Chinese market in recent years -- 39 of the largest 250 U.S. firms have offices in Shanghai, Beijing or Hong Kong. But Washington, D.C., firms have been late to the game, with some justification. Most of the law firm money to be made stems from burgeoning corporate activity -- foreign investment, IPOs and mergers and acquisitions -- which is largely the province of big firms in New York and L.A. Still, China won't be ignored -- there's just too much money at stake.
