Firms Learn to Cope With Alternative Billing Plans

High billing rates, ballooning associate salaries and pressure from executives have heightened corporate counsel's demand for alternative billing. While more firms are answering the call, in-house lawyers say they've seen some pushback, too. Dykema Gossett Chairman Rex Schlaybaugh recognizes that the slowdown phenomenon -- which in-house counsel say they encounter for work done under a fixed-fee arrangement -- is a concern, but he said planning and vision on a law firm's part can help alleviate the problem.
