Bad Year for N.Y. Law Firms Handling M&As

How bad a year was it for New York mergers and acquisitions lawyers? Just ask any lawyer not aboard for Pfizer's $61.3 billion acquisition of Sweden's Pharmacia, which accounted for almost 15 percent of the total value of announced U.S. merger activity in 2002. The dearth of U.S. deals even knocked New York firms off of the summit of the worldwide rankings.

Another Hong Kong Office Closure

For a custom-made suit at less than what it would cost in New York or London, Hong Kong is the place to go. Some lawyers say that distinction applies to legal services as well. Clifford Chance Memo Reveals Bonus Anxiety

Among the facts of large law firm life recounted in the now-famous Oct. 15 Clifford Chance associates' memo, the bleakest for managing partners may be that boom-year bonuses have not only survived the end of the boom, but have become an entrenched expectation and the overwhelming focus of associate unhappiness -- especially when they're perceived as possibly the only communication an associate may get about his or her status.

IPO Market Sags Again In 2003

It doesn't take much these days to be a leading player among law firms that handle initial public offerings. During the Internet boom, a firm had to handle as many as 100 IPOs to be considered a heavyweight. Now, Silicon Valley firms like Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati and Cooley Godward are lucky if they crack five deals in a year. In fact, 2003 was the worst year for IPOs since 1979, data from securities research company Thomson Financial shows. However, securities lawyers see hope ahead.
