There Goes the Neighborhood

Last month, a builder for a housing development in Bakersfield, Calif. abruptly backed out of a deal after learning that the buyer, Timothy Liebaert, is a lawyer. Donavan Judkins, of Burlington Homes, doesn't trust lawyers and has a rigid policy of not selling to them: Too litigious, he claims. The Liebaerts, who -- at the risk of proving Judkins' point -- promptly sued the developer. Their novel claim accuses Judkins of discriminating against lawyers in violation of the state's Unruh Civil Rights Act.
