Lobby Talk: Taking on Fannie Mae
Lobbyists from four of Washington, D.C.'s elite advocacy outfits are preparing to take on the town bullies of the lobby world, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, in what promises to be one of the biggest and messiest political brawls of the next few years. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are renowned for using high-pressure lobbying tactics to fend off regulation and maintain the special status that has helped them grow into two of the nation's largest financial institutions. As Merck wins another bellwether jury verdict in the Fosamax MDL, GSK gets a Lone Pine ruling that could curtail the number of claimants in the Avandia mass tort litigation.
MCI-Verizon Plans to Slash Legal Team
At some point in the coming months, the proverbial blood may be hitting the floor. Verizon Communications Inc.'s $6.7 billion proposed acquisition of MCI Inc. would result in job losses in the corporate legal department -- in all, 357 attorneys work for the two telecom giants -- and it will almost certainly mean some outside law firms are going to lose a big client. If MCI's legal department is targeted for dismantling, it will spell the end of one of the iconic legal players on the D.C. scene. As Firms Grow, Who Can't Afford to Stand Still?

On Nov. 7, Patrick faces off against Republican Lt. Gov. Kerry Murphy Healey. Whoever wins, the Healey-Patrick race will make history. If Healey wins, she will become the first woman elected to that post. If Patrick wins, he will become the first black governor of Massachusetts. For more than 40 years, California was out of synch with the U.S. Supreme Court, permitting defendants in state antitrust actions to argue that direct purchasers suffered no harm because they passed price increases on to consumers. 'NLJ 250' Shows Strong Law Firm Growth Continuing
The 250 largest law firms in the U.S. grew by 4 percent in 2006, a figure that was just shy of the prior year's gains, according to The National Law Journal's 29th annual survey. The results indicate a "healthy legal economy" spurred by strong mergers and acquisitions activity and big-ticket litigation, said one law firm consultant. And while law firms used to base their mergers on geography and size for size's sake, they now take a much more strategic approach, said another consultant.Trending Stories
