DA Wants Out of Van Voorhis' Court

Bucking a decades-long tradition, the Contra Costa County district attorney's office has moved to block Judge Bruce Van Voorhis from hearing criminal cases, a step the judge's lawyer said was motivated by a hotly contested DA's race. The office on Thursday added to the chorus of critics of the Walnut Creek judge accused by the Commission of Judicial Performance of humiliating jurors, court staff and attorneys in open court.

Panel Blasts Pleasanton's Judge Hyde

Embattled Alameda County Judge D. Ronald Hyde gave "completely inconsistent and irreconcilable" explanations for why he abused his judicial powers, according to a report released Friday by a panel of special masters. Although the three judges found Hyde had committed "willful misconduct," it's unclear what punishment he will face. Earlier, the judge announced that he would retire June 2, which meant, at worst, the Commission on Judicial Performance could bar Hyde from sitting on assignment.

Having been scolded twice in published opinions for encouraging potential jurors to lie about any racial bias, a Placer County judge got a third rebuke Wednesday from the Commission on Judicial Performance. The judicial watchdog issued Judge Joseph O'Flaherty a public admonishment, saying there was "clear and convincing" proof that the judge's instructions "constitute conduct prejudicial to the administration of justice."
