U.S. Supreme Court Won't Hear 3M's Appeal of $68 Million Award

The U.S. Supreme Court refused Wednesday to take up a closely watched antitrust case in which office supply giant 3M Co. was hit with a $68 million verdict after allegedly offering retailers rebates that could be earned only by removing a competitor's products from their shelves. Despite ending the case, the ruling could spur a final round of litigation because lawyers that represented plaintiff LePage's Inc. are now entitled to an award of attorney fees.

BellSouth's former GC, Marc Gary, is taking time off -- which is unusual for him, since usually he'd leave one job on Friday and start the next one on Monday. But after almost 30 years of continuous lawyering, Gary's taking a long sabbatical. His decision to leave BellSouth after the AT&T merger doesn't mean he's soured on GC jobs; in fact, he's interested in becoming GC of another major company, or maybe returning to a big firm. Laying a New Foundation

For two decades, the D.C. Bar Foundation has funded pro bono legal shops that represent Washington's poorest residents. Most of the money comes from an Interest on Lawyers Trust Account (IOLTA), which pools the interest lawyers earn when they hold client funds in escrow. Today the effort is suffering. The IOLTA fund has decreased because of low interest rates. And the use of IOLTA funds for legal aid groups is under attack nationwide as an unconstitutional "taking" of client funds.
