Poach a Brobeck Lawyer, Get a Bill

Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison has come up with a novel response to the flight of attorneys in-house: charge clients a fee for hiring away talent. Brobeck is obligating its clients to pay 25 percent of the first-year salary of attorneys lured from the firm. "The provision provides reimbursement to the firm for the training costs for attorneys that clients recruit," firmwide managing partner James Burns Jr. said.

"There is definitely a lot of conversation going on," says one consultant. Talk centers around upping base pay from $125,000 for first-year associates to $140,000 or $145,000.
