Lucasfilm GC Has Never Been Bored at Work

General counsel David Anderman says he's never been bored during his 11 years at Lucasfilm. He considers himself an IP specialist who became a generalist in his job. "Every day is a master class on the edges of intellectual property law," he said, noting that, workwise, almost everything he does touches on IP and IP-related licensing deals. In one occasion, he helped match the licensing of two brands; thus was born the "Darth Tater" -- a combination of the Darth Vader and Mr. Potato Head characters.

Pro Bono Work Is Good for Business

In making the case for why lawyers and legal institutions should undertake pro bono work, supporters of pro bono service typically focus on the compelling need for such assistance. But, says Georgetown Pro Bono Institute's Esther F. Lardent, research has shown that what makes good moral and ethical sense also -- happily -- makes good business sense, too.

Being GC at Dole: Not a Doleful Position

C. Michael Carter, the GC of Dole Food Co., lives in Malibu and has an office that overlooks a huge, man-made waterfall that is part of the company's lush, Edenesque headquarters. Of his work, Carter says, "I tend to take ownership of things and drive them to closure instead of passing the buck or blaming other people." And he has applied this same philosophy in honing his in-house team of attorneys while reducing expenses for outside counsel.

Small Firms Take It to the Bank

After years of consolidation in the banking industry, there are fewer clients to go around. And borrowers who usually foot the legal bills are putting pressure on banks, which in turn demand flat-fee arrangements and lower rates from law firms. That's good news to banking boutiques like husband-and-wife-run Rehon & Roberts, but not to bigger firms. These days large firms tend to view their lending practices more as a complementary service to their higher billing areas rather than a revenue driver in itself.

3rd Circuit Judges to Testify on Alito's Behalf

After two days of defending his record, Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito Jr. will be reinforced today by seven people who know his tenure from the inside: his fellow 3rd Circuit judges. And although judges have testified before on behalf of Supreme Court nominees, the 3rd Circuit judges are coming under fire for injecting themselves into the political process. Eldie Acheson, a former top Clinton Justice Department official, says: "As judges and as a court, this is not their business."

Direction of Apple Probe Clouded by Shakeups in U.S. Attorney's Office

Two things set the investigation of Apple apart from other backdating probes: the indispensability of the company's CEO and the fact that in-house lawyers are getting the most scrutiny, even though HR staff were also involved in options grants. Steve Jobs last week took the risky step of talking to prosecutors and SEC lawyers. But with turmoil in the U.S. Attorney's Office, and no joint defense agreement among potential defendants, the probe looks more uncertain than ever for all parties involved.

Pressure On for S.F. Mayor Brown -- And U.S. Attorneys

San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown has persistently, even angrily, denied that he was a subject of a public corruption probe launched by the FBI and the U.S. attorney's office. But he may be left shouting into the wind in the wake of a report that a grand jury issued subpoenas to Brown's office. The subpoenas reportedly ask for records of the mayor's contacts with businesses and major players in a broad investigation into alleged city contracting abuses.
