Six Class Actions Certified in Massive Public Offerings Suit

The mountain of litigation over stock prices' collapse following initial public offerings in the technology boom has moved to a new phase with the certification of six class actions. Setting the stage for settlement talks or a possible trial, federal Judge Shira Scheindlin in New York has certified classes in suits against VA Linux Corp. and five other "focus cases." The suits charge that investors were defrauded by 310 companies and the investment banks that brought their shares to market.

Summer associate ranks look thinner for the upcoming season as many of the nation's law firms have pulled back from the record-breaking hiring of 2007.
