Major Hagen & Africa Wins Some, Loses Some

Major, Hagen & Africa, one of the world's largest legal search firms, is going through growing pains. Cashing in The Second Time Around

Network Solutions, the Virginia-based keeper of Internet domain names, returned to the financing trough by staging the largest public offering recorded to date in the Internet sector. The secondary offering raised about $2.2 billion, giving the company an infusion of cash and also pumping fees into Pillsbury Madison & Sutro, which served as counsel on the deal. At issue is whether a patent can be held invalid if it does not provide a "written description" of the invention. The 7 to 5 decision revealed a sharp divide that lawyers say requires action by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Golden Stem Cells?

When the backers of California's stem cell initiative, Proposition 71, were seeking voter support last year, they promised not only cures for dreaded diseases but also licensing revenues for the state. But most biotech IP lawyers say it is foolhardy and wildly optimistic to predict that royalty revenues will come to California in the uncertain area of stem cell-derived therapies.

Has Heller's Growth Strategy Backfired in San Diego?

An aggressive growth strategy in Heller Ehrman's corporate practice was meant to give the litigator-heavy firm broader stability. But in some cases, it's led to instability: In the last six weeks, Heller's San Diego corporate practice has lost nearly half its lawyers, mostly longtime Heller attorneys. One of the most dramatic losses was 15-year veteran Stephen Ferruolo's move to Goodwin Procter shortly after clashing with former Brobeck partners and ultimately losing his leadership title to one.
