New York Lawyers React to World Trade Center Disaster

"It was total panic," said New York lawyer Robert Eisman who was coming out of the subway when he saw people running in terror. New York lawyers reacted with shock and concern for their colleagues in the aftermath of the World Trade Center disaster. Reynolds Richards managing partner Dennis Zagroba was in his office. "We could hear the buildings collapse," he recalled. "It looked like the middle of the night."

Ugly Divorce

When Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy snagged the role as creditors committee counsel in the Pacific Gas & Electric Company bankruptcy this spring, it was a coup for the New York firm. To win the high-profile-and surely lucrative-assignment, it had to beat five competitors. Divided High Court Upholds FCC Ban on 'Fleeting Expletives'

By a narrow 5-4 vote, the Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that the Federal Communications Commission acted reasonably in banning even the single-time utterance of "fleeting expletives" over broadcast airwaves. But the decision in FCC v. Fox Television Stations stopped short of deciding whether the ban violates the First Amendment, as broadcasters had argued. In announcing the opinion, as well as in the text of the decision, Justice Antonin Scalia used euphemisms and asterisks instead of the real words at issue.

Chicago Blows Into Firms' View

For high-grossing coastal law firms looking for another base, Chicago has traditionally not been the Second City, even with its now $350 billion economy. But that's changing. Since the start of 2001, 13 Am Law 200 firms have opened or greatly expanded offices there -- and more arrivals are expected. Other out-of-towners have concentrated on acquiring well-established locals and have set about wooing laterals and possible merger partners. Inside Man

Picked by George W. Bush to be his next attorney general, Alberto Gonzales seems to have been chosen more for his closeness to the president than for anything else. But that loyalty -- described by a former Bush official as Gonzales' "primary characteristic" -- could have its drawbacks. If he is confirmed as AG, Gonzales may be called on to oversee investigations into members of his own administration, an awkward task for a famously dedicated aide.

Alternative Energy

Ethanol is not just a hot commodity for farmers anymore. Once the specialty of small law firms in the Midwest, ethanol production has sparked interest among Wall Street law firms such as Chadbourne & Parke and Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy. Some firms including New York-based Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom and Pacific Northwest firm Stoel Rives are developing new practice areas in renewable energy to accommodate the rapid demand.
