"They thought there was an opportunity to build out a Big Four model that could practice law in the U.S. and the pitch was going to good firms in smaller markets and asking them to join," said Indiana University Maurer School of Law professor Bill Henderson. "There was a shared service model that was quite coherent. That's the model. Time will tell if it works in practice."

The firm first announced its strategy for expansion in the U.S. in late 2019, via combinations with a firm in Pittsburgh and another in the Midwest. Three more followed, but the last addition was over three years ago.
