A unanimous federal appeals panel in Manhattan yesterday overturned an order requiring the defendants in the sprawling Galleon securities fraud case to turn over to the Securities and Exchange Commission approximately 18,000 wiretapped conversations they had been given by prosecutors in a parallel criminal prosecution.The appellate court was asked to decide if Manhattan federal judge Jed Rakoff improperly ordered Raj Rajaratnam to give the SEC wiretap information provided to him in the government's parallel criminal case.
'NLJ 250' Shows Strong Law Firm Growth Continuing
The 250 largest law firms in the U.S. grew by 4 percent in 2006, a figure that was just shy of the prior year's gains, according to The National Law Journal's 29th annual survey. The results indicate a "healthy legal economy" spurred by strong mergers and acquisitions activity and big-ticket litigation, said one law firm consultant. Billionaire hedge fund founder Raj Rajaratnam responded forcefully to SEC insider trading charges in papers filed Tuesday by his lawyers at Akin Gump, who claim that wiretaps that federal investigators used to implicate Rajaratnam in a $20 million insider trading ring were unconstitutional.
