Fortress Investment Group Sues Dechert Over Dreier Investment

Back when the mega Ponzi schemes of 2008 broke, law firms braced themselves for lawsuits questioning their diligence in advising clients interested in making investments with the Bernard Madoffs and Marc Dreiers of the world. For the most part, the wave of suits hasn't materialized. But now Fortress Investment Group, the huge private equity fund, has sued Dechert, claiming the firm's lack of diligence in sniffing out Dreier's fraud cost Fortress $125 million, according to The Wall Street Journal.

A six-person jury in a court that normally hears cases worth $25,000 or less has rejected $23 million in claims against 50 insurance companies from a doctor who claimed to own a professional corporation that performed MRIs for no-fault accident victims. A California 2nd District Court of Appeal panel authorized the public release of confidential files on Franciscan friars accused of sexual abuse, upholding a trial court decision that the compelling social interest of protecting children outweighed friars' privacy rights. The friars had fought the release, which was included in a $28.5 million settlement reached in 2006 after plaintiffs in 25 separate lawsuits sued the Franciscan Friars of California, alleging they had been sexually abused by clergy members.
