Law Firm Must Defend Claims of Abetting Asset Transfer

A frustrated purchaser of African art is claiming that a New York attorney abetted the seller in fleeing the jurisdiction with his assets. Martin Trepel of Florida sued attorney Karen Dippold and her law firm, claiming that Dippold falsely represented that the possessions of art dealer Mourtala Diop had been seized by Manhattan prosecutors. Judge Denise Cote declined to grant Dippold and her firm, Beldock Levine & Hoffman, summary judgment in the case, but also made a ruling limiting the firm's exposure.
