Law Firm Retirement Policies Expected to Be Hot Issue at Annual ABA Meeting
More than 9,000 attorneys, judges and other legal types will meet in San Francisco for the ABA's 130th annual meeting this week. Besides hosting U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen G. Breyer as the keynote speaker, the organization will take up issues ranging from state secrets privileges to law firms' mandatory retirement policies. The latter issue has received particular attention because of an EEOC action filed against Sidley Austin on behalf of about 30 former partners.Ban on Nude Photos in Jail Upheld
Naked pictures are officially a thing of the past in most Phoenix area jails. The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday rejected a challenge by a now-former inmate who took issue with Maricopa County, Ariz. The FTC does not have the authority to impose financial damages, but it can require companies to pay back profits that the agency determines were ill-gotten.Judge Interrupts Vioxx Testimony To Instruct Jury on Label Warnings
Eight hours into his testimony at the Vioxx trial in Atlantic City last Tuesday, the plaintiffs' first witness got a jolt. The judge interrupted Merck sales and marketing executive David Anstice and gave jurors a curative instruction: Merck could have issued a safety warning at any time after it learned of the painkiller's cardiovascular risks in March 2000.Fosamax Plaintiffs Lawyer: Mistrial a 'Shock' to Merck
To those tracking the first product liability trial accusing Merck's osteoporosis drug Fosamax of causing debilitating jaw bone deterioration, it should come as no surprise that a mistrial was declared on Friday. But the lead plaintiffs lawyer's view of the eight-member jury's failure to reach a verdict may raise some eyebrows.Trending Stories
