Bingham to Open Hong Kong Office

Coming late in the game to the China market, Bingham McCutchen announced Monday that it will open a three-lawyer Hong Kong office on Jan. 1. Other firms have more robust and established Asia practices, but Bingham's London managing partner, James Roome, said his firm's office will be different. "The globalization of distressed investing by hedge funds and investment banks is leading us to Hong Kong," said Roome. "A lot of firms have gone to Hong Kong, but not necessarily to do this."

Gimme Shelter: Former Associate GC at KPMG Indicted

It was just a matter of time before federal prosecutors got around to accusing a KPMG in-house attorney of participating in an alleged tax shelter conspiracy at the accounting firm, so it was no surprise when the government indicted Steven Gremminger, KPMG's former associate general counsel, in October. Gremminger, who has pleaded not guilty, was an associate GC from 1998 to 2005 and was the law department's primary contact for the firm's tax practice, according to the government.
