One of the most scrutinized battles among antitrust lawyers ended Monday when the Justice Department won responsibility for reviewing Whirlpool's $2.7 billion acquisition of Maytag. The deal is a coveted prize for regulators because of the many thorny issues to address, including high market share for appliances and new competition from overseas. The long-dormant buyout market might finally be emerging from its slumber as a trio of U.K. companies were scooped up by British private equity firms on Thursday. One of the sales involved CPA Global, a leading legal process outsourcing firm, to London-based mezzanine lender Intermediate Capital Group.
