Lippman Backs Economies But Not at Cost of Access
Regarding the budget, the Chief Judge yesterday vowed to vigorously pursue economies in the judicial system, but not to the point of denying access to courts for people buffeted by hard times.Orrick-Levi Strauss Deal Underscores Growth of Alternative Billing
Alternative fee billing has been a buzzword for decades, but many say the latest recession has finally given the trend some teeth. Witness Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe's all-in arrangement with Levi Strauss & Co. Earlier this year, Orrick inked a deal with Levi Strauss that is the law firm's broadest alternative fee arrangement ever. Orrick will handle all of Levi Strauss' legal work worldwide in exchange for a fixed yearly fee paid in monthly increments.Gunderson Dettmer Snags Wilson Sonsini Trio for New Office
Gunderson Dettmer Stough Villeneuve Franklin & Hachigian, the Menlo Park, Calif.-based firm declared as good as dead by some observers after the Internet bust, is opening a new office in San Diego with Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati's Gari Cheever, Jeffrey Higgins and Ilan Lovinsky, who are all joining as partners. "San Diego is the third-largest market for [venture capital] activity after Silicon Valley and Boston," says firm founder Robert Gunderson Jr. But some warn that San Diego is over-lawyered.Alexander Schoch: The Negotiator
Alexander Schoch is a "get-the-deal-done type of guy," in the words of an acquaintance. His negotiating prowess makes him a likely candidate to inherit the GC post at Emerson Electric when the current general counsel retires. Says a colleague, "He's absolutely GC material."Texas Firms Slow First-Year Hiring Pace
For the hopeful Class of 1999, 1998 was an aberration - most first-year associates in Texas won't be receiving a raise over the typical $90,100 starting salary. A survey of Texas' 25 largest firms also reveals that the number of associates in the 1999 first-year class, while larger than last year's, does not represent as significant a jump as the 1998 class did. James Maloney, whose firm co-led the salary charge last year, says, "I think you're going to see slow growth, not explosive growth."Barclays, Boies Schiller Blow Open Attorney-Client Privilege in Lehman Case
The attorney-client privilege issue at the heart of the dispute between Barclays and Lehman Brothers got a whole lot bigger Wednesday, when the Boies, Schiller & Flexner team representing Barclays filed papers requesting access to privileged documents from as many as three additional Am Law 100 firms. This is the latest -- and probably the biggest -- power play in the dispute over the ultrasensitive Barclays-Lehman deal.Alston & Bird Raises First-Year Pay to $145K
Alston & Bird is raising pay for its Atlanta associates, effective next January, with first-years getting a bump from $130,000 to $145,000. But not everyone's happy. Visitors to the Above the Law blog contended that associate pay in Atlanta lags behind that of comparable markets -- and others criticized Alston for pay compression, pointing out that the firm isn't increasing pay for more senior classes by the $15,000 figure that first-years will enjoy. "First years get a 15K raise. I get 5K," groused one.Trending Stories
