Courts are facing budget squeeze

The federal judiciary says a looming wave of immigration prosecutions, staff cost-of-living pay adjustments and raises for defense lawyers assigned to indigents are among the reasons it needs a 7.6 percent increase in its fiscal year 2009 budget. The request for a total budget of $6.72 billion does not include the 26 percent pay increase for federal judges recommended by the Senate Judiciary Committee in December, according to Judge Julia S.
