Illinois settles for $77 million over college savings plan
Illinois has become the first state to reach a final agreement with OppenheimerFunds Inc. over losses that consumers suffered when the company invested college savings funds in what states called overly risky financial securities.In 1999 the estate of a smoker won a $79.5 million punitive award against Philip Morris. Under Oregon law, the state's crime victim fund was entitled to 60 percent of that amount. Philip Morris argued that the state's claim to the money was extinguished under the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement. The Oregon Supreme court on Friday said it wasn't and that Philip Morris owes the state the money.
