Cooley's Crossroads

Despite the dismal economy and decline in technology-related work, Palo Alto, Calif.-based Cooley Godward has managed to increase its profitability, retain most of its partnership and avoid debt quicksand. But looking ahead, the firm is trying to answer a key question: continue to go it alone as a solid regional player with a few outposts, or merge with another firm to create a national legal force?

Texas Firms Slow First-Year Hiring Pace

For the hopeful Class of 1999, 1998 was an aberration - most first-year associates in Texas won't be receiving a raise over the typical $90,100 starting salary. A survey of Texas' 25 largest firms also reveals that the number of associates in the 1999 first-year class, while larger than last year's, does not represent as significant a jump as the 1998 class did. James Maloney, whose firm co-led the salary charge last year, says, "I think you're going to see slow growth, not explosive growth."

Barclays, Boies Schiller Blow Open Attorney-Client Privilege in Lehman Case

The attorney-client privilege issue at the heart of the dispute between Barclays and Lehman Brothers got a whole lot bigger Wednesday, when the Boies, Schiller & Flexner team representing Barclays filed papers requesting access to privileged documents from as many as three additional Am Law 100 firms. Alston & Bird Raises First-Year Pay to $145K

Alston & Bird is raising pay for its Atlanta associates, effective next January, with first-years getting a bump from $130,000 to $145,000. But not everyone's happy. Visitors to the Above the Law blog contended that associate pay in Atlanta lags behind that of comparable markets -- and others criticized Alston for pay compression, pointing out that the firm isn't increasing pay for more senior classes by the $15,000 figure that first-years will enjoy. "First years get a 15K raise. I get 5K," groused one.

Sovereign Immunity Questioned

The state of Georgia is liable for the drowning of a 2-year-old child at her foster parents' home, lawyers for the girl's natural family told the Georgia Supreme Court Monday. At issue in the case is not just the child's death but whether the state is protected from some claims under an exemption clause of the Georgia Tort Claims Act. It is one of two very similar cases being heard by the high court on the issue of state tort claims.

High Court Justices Take Aim at 'Honest Services' Law

U.S. Supreme Court justices of all stripes appeared sharply critical on Tuesday of the federal law that makes it a crime to "deprive another of honest services," leaving the often-used prosecutorial tool in serious doubt. The law has been attacked by liberals and conservatives alike as an example of "overcriminalization" and the tendency of Congress to outlaw activities that are already covered by state laws, giving federal prosecutors too much power.

Online Dating, a Great Model for Recruiting

The fall round of law student recruiting, replete with lunches, mixers, informal get-togethers and the like, has finally arrived. It reminds our columnist of a radio ad for a dating service he heard one day. He asks: "Isn't this recruiting business pretty much just like what everyone went through to meet their significant other?" To help you find your soul-mate-in-a-firm, he presents a series of carefully researched and utterly facetious psychological questions.
