California Justice on Track for D.C. Circuit

California Supreme Court Justice Janice Rogers Brown could be on her way to Washington, D.C. Perhaps not to the U.S. Supreme Court, as many have speculated, but rather to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit -- often considered a stepping-stone to the nation's highest court. Brown, who rose steadily in California Republican circles after graduating from the UCLA School of Law, has been considered an ideal choice for the Bush administration.

Finnegan Struggles With Growing Pains

Until recently, the intellectual property firm Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner was the epitome of the old guard, with an all-partners-are-equal mentality that can still be found at firms like Covington & Burling, Arnold & Porter and a few large New York firms. Now, Finnegan is dealing with the reality that getting bigger typically leads to creating a new class structure -- or at least thinking about doing so. It's a crossroads moment that more and more law firms are facing.

Law Firms Place Bets on Vegas

If legal markets went through life stages, Las Vegas would be an adolescent. Ten years ago Nevada did not have a law school. Five years ago it had the most restrictive rules on multijurisdictional practice in the country. And for decades Las Vegas' legal community was a tiny pool of lawyers at insular firms, handling local matters for hotels, casinos and mining companies. Today, all that is changing, and local firms are slowly making way for outsiders. But are the arrivistes late to the party?

Federal Judge Refuses to Dismiss Suit in Provigil Antitrust Case

In a closely watched antitrust case, a federal judge has refused to dismiss claims that biopharmaceutical giant Cephalon established an illegal monopoly for its profitable drug Provigil by paying more than $200 million in settlements to four generic manufacturers in return for agreements that they would delay going to market with cheaper versions of the drug.
