Arent Fox Takes Over Calif. Boutique as Part of Westward Expansion

Arent Fox has expanded westward with its takeover of Los Angeles-based, nine-lawyer litigation boutique O'Brien Abeles. The merger will take effect Jan. 1. The move represents a rebound of sorts, as this is the firm's first expansion since it closed four regional offices starting in 1993, keeping only its Washington headquarters and New York office. Marc Fleischaker, chairman of Arent Fox, says firm clients like Walt Disney Co. and Sony Corp. fueled the desire to move west.

AP - Five air traffic controllers are suing roofing contractors after they claim they lost their jobs after being unable to work because of toxic chemical exposure.The five employees, Barbara Cooper, Shawn Fields, Dan Kersh, Joe Tingler and Tommy Young, claim they were fired when their doctors would not allow them to return to work in the radar room at Jacksonville International Airport's control tower.

English-Only Employment Cases Quintuple in Four Years

Complaints against companies implementing English-only policies have almost quintupled in the last four years. In 1996, 77 such complaints were made; so far this year, the EEOC has received 365. The EEOC prosecutes about 20 lawsuits each year and has been increasingly successful obtaining settlements, thanks in part to a new EEOC task force on national origin discrimination.
