Lost in the Maze

T's always a challenge to find the right legal guide for Washington's regulatory jungle. Valero Energy Corporation thought it made the right choice this spring when it picked Jones Day to shepherd a deal through the Federal Trade Commission. But a month later Valero abruptly switched counsel-to Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz-in an apparent attempt to improve its chances at the FTC.

Allen v. State

The trial court's overruling of Appellant's objections to the attack on defense counsel during jury argument is error because the argument was not relevant, it injected personal opinion, and it violated the Texas Lawyers Creed. However, the improper argument does not constitute reversible error.

You`ll Never Get What You Don`t Ask For

Advertising, along with the telecommunications industry, has been especially hard hit by the economic slowdown. As a result, advertisers have negotiated some fairly amazing deals, things that might have seemed to good to be true or even impossible just a short while ago. Hungry to Help

When Daniel S. Kahn, of Davis Polk & Wardwell, was an undergraduate, he noticed that students left a lot of food at school at the end of the year. "I don't think that life really is meant to just do things for yourself or attain your own goals," Kahn said.

A Memorable Sendoff for Former AG Jim Mattox

It was a funeral former Texas Attorney General Jim Mattox would have loved: All of the old yellow dog Democrats were there -- as was an actual yellow dog. Wearing a red bandana, "Jack," the Mattoxes' Labrador, was among the more than 1,000 mourners on hand for the Nov. 25 services for Mattox in the First Baptist Church of Austin.

As Corporate Attorney, Miers Blasted 'Greedy' Trial Lawyers

As a corporate lawyer, Harriet Miers recommended to then-Gov. Bush that the Texas Supreme Court rather than the state Legislature decide if attorney fees should be limited -- a proposal that, had it come to fruition, would have "absolutely" constituted "legislating from the bench," said one trial lawyer. In a letter to Bush, Miers went on to unleash an assault on trial lawyers, suggesting they were "greedy" and had "brought shame" to Texas.

"The Big Buy" May Be a Hard Sell

It would seem as though a documentary that chronicles the rise and fall of former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay would at least attract a pack of Yellow Dog Democrats.
