Lawyers Make Leap From Biglaw to 'Pocket' Firms
When associates tell recruiter Delia Swan they want some breathing room from big-firm life -- but still want to practice with top credentialed attorneys -- she lets them in on a little secret. "I call them my pocket listings," says Swan of the firms, typically spinoffs of major L.A. firms, which offer top-notch lawyers and clients but set the billable-hour requirement around 1,600 hours. The pay isn't as high, but recruiters see a growing demand for such placements as associates protest big-firm drudgery.Cleary Sanctioned for Trying to Interfere With Testimony
A federal judge has sanctioned Cleary Gottlieb for trying to dissuade a witness from testifying about his dealings with the Republic of Congo, which the firm is representing in a dispute with a hedge fund. Judge Loretta Preska said Cleary had "shown a willingness to operate in the murky area between zealous advocacy and improper conduct, and here it crossed the line." She ordered that a reprimand be circulated to all Cleary lawyers and that the firm be assessed attorney fees for the sanctions motion.Retailers sued for infringement over merchandise tracking technology

Days after Los Angeles firms O'Melveny & Myers and Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker hiked base salaries for associates, San Francisco's Keker & Van Nest announced it was matching the raise. Keker partner Christopher Kearney said last week that the 50-lawyer litigation firm would increase the base pay for first-year associates to $135,000 to equal the raise at those two firms and at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, which had kicked off the latest wave of increases in December.Federal Judge Curtly Ends Lawyer Tiff in Patent Infringement Suit
Like a teacher scolding misbehaving children, a senior federal judge took several far-younger, big-firm lawyers to task Thursday for filing two poorly argued motions to disqualify the other side's counsel. Senior U.S. District Judge William Schwarzer roundly rejected both motions and wouldn't entertain the attorneys' other requests in court either. Friskit Inc. has accused the much larger RealNetworks of infringing on patents related to organizing and playing video and audio files.Lockheed Suit Over Domain Names Crashes
The nation's leading domain name registrar is off the hook for trademark infringements by cybersquatters and others who use its services, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled. Network Solutions Inc., a Virginia-based company that was until recently the only place to go to register dot.coms in the United States, is not liable for contributory infringement when it registers a domain name. The case has been widely watched by the Internet industry and trademark attorneys.Yeehaw! Google Searches Up a Way to Avoid Another Trial in East Texas
