In a much-anticipated $9.8 billion transaction, BlackRock, Inc., one of the country's largest sellers of stock funds, and Merrill Lynch & Co., the leading seller of fixed-income funds and bonds, announced that they will merge Merrill Lynch's investment management business with BlackRock in order to establish an independent asset management firm.
