As part of a compromise deal, the U.S. Senate confirmed two judges to the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, including Helene White, one originally nominated by President Clinton 11 years ago. Two New Jersey men charged with conspiring to kill American troops in Somalia were denied bail Thursday as a federal judge accepted prosecutors' arguments that no conditions could reasonably assure that the defendants would show up for their legal proceedings and that they pose a risk to the community. Prosecutors allege that Carlos Almonte and Mohamed Alessa were headed for Somalia because they intended to join Al Shabaab, an insurgent group fighting the U.S.-backed government, and to wage a violent jihad.
