SEC Chairman Urges Effort to Simplify Accounting Rules

For the second time in less than a month, SEC Chairman Christopher Cox has argued for the simplification of accounting rules, this time in a videotaped speech presented Monday to a conference of accountants. Cox blamed the recent corporate scandals in part on the complexity of the current system. He said the SEC is encouraging "a major national effort" to reduce the rules' complexity, with the participation of the accounting oversight board, the Financial Accounting Standards Board and the industry.

Holland & Knight Scholarship to Provide Tuition, Summer Associate Job

Holland & Knight has endowed a scholarship for second-year students at Florida A&M University's law school that will cover full tuition and guarantee the recipient a summer associate position with the firm. This year, the scholarship will pay $7,178 of the in-state tuition for a student Holland selects from the historically black university. "We hope this will give us a broader pool of lawyers to choose from to meet our goal in having a diverse law firm," partner Martha Barnett said.
