Eli Lilly and Co. says it will settle about 18,000 lawsuits alleging the drugmaker did not adequately warn patients that its anti-psychotic medication Zyprexa carries a heightened risk of diabetes. A Lilly spokeswoman said the claims were less viable than 8,000 cases the company settled for about $700 million in 2005, due to a Zyprexa labeling change addressing diabetes risks. She said Lilly will go to trial to resolve 1,200 remaining cases, which she said are not being settled for "various reasons."

To begin with, IT services and service providers themselves will inevitably have to become more energy efficient, as IT related energy consumption will no doubt comprise an ever increasing percentage of total energy use. But efficiency on the delivery side is only part of the story - and probably in the long term not the most significant contribution IT will make. What is more compelling in the long run is the transformational role that IT services, software and outsourcing will play in making everything else greener: to help make governments, businesses and other institutions operate in a leaner, smarter and cleaner manner.
