Ruling the distribution of computer code enabling the copying of DVDs was not protected by the First Amendment, a federal judge in New York handed the motion picture industry a major victory Thursday. In an opinion upholding the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, Judge Lewis Kaplan said computer code is not "purely expressive any more than the assassination of a political figure is purely a political statement."
