Senate Ends Scheduling Impasse Over Deputy Attorney General Nominee

The White House formally nominated a federal judge for the Justice Department's No. 2 job on Wednesday, a day after the Senate Judiciary Committee chairman threatened to postpone confirmation hearings until next year. Instead, Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., reversed himself, agreeing to hold hearings for U.S. District Judge Mark Filip of Chicago on Dec. 19. Filip is nominated to serve as deputy attorney general.
