Andrews Kurth Raises Base Salaries for Some Associates

Andrews Kurth raised base salaries for its top-performing associates on Jan. 1, says Robert Jewell, the Houston-based firm's managing partner. The salary increase is for about 25 of the firm's 134 associates who have worked 2,000 qualifying hours for each of the past two years, Jewell says. The qualifying hours include billable hours and nonbillable hours, such as pro bono matters and diversity activities, he says.

When the recession began, many in the South Florida legal community worried the diversity gains made in recent years would take a serious hit if law firms used last-hired, first-fired policies to cut staff, disproportionately affecting minorities.
