Judge Denies Bail to Alleged Jihadists, Citing Flight Risk and Danger to Public

Two New Jersey men charged with conspiring to kill American troops in Somalia were denied bail Thursday as a federal judge accepted prosecutors' arguments that no conditions could reasonably assure that the defendants would show up for their legal proceedings and that they pose a risk to the community. Prosecutors allege that Carlos Almonte and Mohamed Alessa were headed for Somalia because they intended to join Al Shabaab, an insurgent group fighting the U.S.-backed government, and to wage a violent jihad.
