U.S. Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan on Tuesday urged criminal defense trial lawyers to turn over their cases to appellate specialists when they get to the high court.

Speaking at Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago, Kagan applauded the growth of the specialized Supreme Court bar, but voiced concern that in many criminal cases, local lawyers are too reluctant to surrender their chance for a Supreme Court argument to specialists.
