Good morning and welcome to Supreme Court Brief! The 8-foot fence around the court is gone, but still no word on whether the building will reopen to the public, and whether live streaming of arguments will continue. While we wait for answers, we spoke with Finnegan's James Barney, a U.S. Navy veteran, who makes his high court debut on behalf of a Navy veteran. And a broad campaign to persuade the solicitor general to back the overruling of the Insular Cases in a pending petition was unsuccessful. We are taking a short break next week and we'll be back on Sept. 14.

A Navy Vet Argues a Navy Vet's High Court Case

When Finnegan partner James Barney makes his Supreme Court debut on the second day of the new term, he will be carrying forward his law firm's 14-year-old pro bono commitment to helping veterans.

Barney's argument in Arellano v. McDonough may well be overshadowed by that morning's first argument, the closely-watched Alabama voting rights challenge, Merrill v. Milligan. But like the few veterans' cases that reach the high court, this one has the potential to affect thousands of veterans in long and hard-fought battles over disability benefits.
