Welcome to this edition of Supreme Court Brief.

The court heard oral arguments in U.S. v. Rahimi on Tuesday, in which the Biden administration is asking the justices to uphold the constitutionality of a nearly 30-year-old law banning those under domestic violence restraining orders from possessing guns. I covered the hearing for The National Law Journal here.

Fifteen minutes before the justices took the bench to hear Rahimi, the court handed down an order denying an emergency application from BP, Shell and Hilcorp to stop an upcoming trial in a $7 billion lawsuit from a Louisiana parish over coastal land loss. The denial is yet another sign that civil litigants face an uphill battle in seeking emergency relief from the Supreme Court's "shadow docket."
