Welcome to Supreme Court Brief. The justices returned to the bench Monday morning for the first oral arguments of 2024.

The justices spent nearly two hours debating an issue of immigration law that, per the government's words, could open up a path for "hundreds of thousands" of noncitizens to challenge their removal orders.

The consolidated cases Campos-Chaves v. Garland and Garland v. Singh ask what happens when the government fails to include the time and place on a "notice to appear" at a removal hearing. Can the government simply include that information on a subsequent "notice of hearing"? This technical dispute has echoes of the court's recent decisions regarding deficient immigration notices in Niz-Chavez v. Garland and Pereira v. Sessions.
