Welcome to Supreme Court Brief. The court heard oral arguments in two cases on Wednesday.

In Gonzalez v. Trevino, the court considered the case of a then-72-year-old Texas city councilwoman who spent the day in jail for briefly moving a document during a council meeting. Sylvia Gonzalez claims her arrest was illegal retaliation by the mayor and his allies over her criticism of another city official.

Although Gonzalez has not disputed that there was probable cause for her arrest on suspicion of tampering with a government document, she nevertheless argues her lawsuit should go forward under an exception recognized by the Supreme Court for cases in which there is "objective evidence" of retaliation.
