Welcome to this edition of Supreme Court BriefI'm Jimmy Hoover. I've been covering the Supreme Court for the National Law Journal and Law.com since April 2023. For the next nine months, I will be sending you updates via this newsletter about the latest doings at One First Street, including argument recaps, opinion analysis, attorney spotlights and whatever else may pique the interest of the sophisticated SCOTUS watcher.

Tomorrow's edition will highlight Tuesday's showdown at the high court in the biggest gun case on the docket this term: Garland v. Vanderstok, in which the federal government is defending the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives' 2022 rule seeking to eliminate the spread of "ghost guns."

The rule, invalidated by a lower court but temporarily reinstated by the Supreme Court, subjects the sale of firearm kits over the internet to the same restrictions and tracking as other gun purchases regulated under the 1968 Gun Control Act. U.S. Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar will argue on behalf of the government, going up against Cooper & Kirk appellate lawyer Peter Patterson, who will represent the rule's challengers.
