One sign that Sisters In Law, Linda Hirshman’s new biography of Justices Sandra Day O’Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, is not just a celebratory work is the title of Chapter 17: “Justice O’Connor’s Self-Inflicted Wound.”

In the chapter Hirshman faults O’Connor for voting in favor of George W. Bush in the landmark Bush v. Gore case in 2000, a decision that put Bush in the White House—who in turn put Samuel Alito Jr. in O’Connor’s seat when she retired in 2006.
