The oral argument in the latest abortion case before the U.S. Supreme Court got so intense and fact-specific that it lasted nearly 20 minutes longer than the one hour allotted to it.
The outcome is difficult to predict, but several pivotal moments illustrated the concerns the justices had about both sides of the case Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt. Abortion clinics are challenging a 2013 Texas law imposing regulations that critics say will shutter all but a handful of facilities in the state.
