Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito Jr. on Monday joined together in criticizing the U.S. Supreme Court’s disposal of two hot-button issues: marijuana and guns.

The two justices’ comments in the gun case, Caetano v. Massachusetts, and the marijuana case, Nebraska and Oklahoma v. Colorado, stood out on a day in which all of the justices took new seats on the bench. Monday marked the end of a 30-day mourning period for the late Justice Antonin Scalia.
